What did people think about their day?
Each workshop is planned to meet the specific requirements of the people who attend. Some are absolute beginners, some are more experienced; all want to go home and make more preserves, some vowing never to buy from shops again!
A FUTURE CHEF in the making
This young man has ambitions to become a chef one day. He spent the day at The Yorkshire Preservatory making a selection of Christmas jams and chutneys for his family's Christmas presents. With individual teaching he learned; safe knife skills, food hygiene rules, how to prepare fruit and vegetables, sterilization and bottling skills. He was rightly proud of himself by the end of a very busy day.

Me and my mum had an absolutely wonderful day today making Christmas jams and chutneys. We've learned so much, I definitely won't go back to buying jam now I know how to make my own and I'll be putting my new skills to use over Christmas for gifts for family and friends!
Also as I'm vegan Sian made sure all ingrediants were suitable for me and provided a beautiful lunch which made us both feel so welcome :)

JANET GROWS TOO MUCH BEETROOT AND RED CABBAGE TO EAT EVERY YEAR ON HER ALLOTMENT AND WANTED TO LEARN HOW TO PRESERVE SOME FOR WINTER.
Well, who would have thought, little old me making Beetroot Relish PLUS pickled Red Cabbage!!! Never thought I could do anything like this, but with a great lesson from Sian I was able to put what I'd grown to something fabulous, Thanks Sian, couldn't have done it with out you. Janet.
JANUARY MARMALADE MAKING WORKSHOPS BROUGHT BACK CHILDHOOD MEMORIES FOR ONE PERSON
I had a wonderful day marmalade making with Sian. Her warmth and enthusiasm both inspires and gives confidence. The workshops are fantastic value as not only do you get a full day of Sian's guidance and encouragement and with all materials, ingredients and trimmings provided, but a delicious homemade lunch and refreshments, plus a generous pile of your homemade preserves to go home with and enjoy for weeks to come. Thanks for inspiring my big sister - marmalade-making brings back such amazing memories of our Dad 😍 I wish could have attended the workshop too - next year!
Its a family affair Had the loveliest day with Sian and family when visiting for jam and chutney making yesterday. My brother managed to get a gift experience for my mum for her birthday for 2 people, and I'm so glad she took me along.
We learned so much about the WHOLE process, from growing to tasting. Sian is so easy to get along with and an excellent teacher! I never cook and after this experience wonder WHY I don't, I love it!
Thank you so much for a lovely day - and to anyone considering visiting - DO IT! It's such a lovely day and the family are super welcoming and friendly. Me and my mum (and brother and sister in law - they have done it before) loved this experience.

Learn a new skill
I booked this as a spur of the moment thing and I'm so glad I did! It was a great day and I learned a lot. Sian is a great teacher, very knowledgeable about jam and chutney making and her enthusiasm is infectious. The structure of the day worked very well, with a mixture of sampling, advice, the sciencey pectin bit :) and of course the actual jam and chutney making, plus a delicious lunch of Sian's home made soup. I was lucky enough to be the only student on the day so I got a great one-to-one experience. I would definitely return for more classes if I lived closer!
